I am a graduate student at Middlebury College Florence. - Why study or intern abroad in Florence?
The city is just the right size. Rome is too big and other places too small. You can interact with Italians or find other international people. You can find almost any subject to study in Florence. - Is Florence a safe place to study abroad (perhaps mention also some nice/cool neighborhood to hang out) ?
Florence is like any other city. You need to be aware of your surroundings. Great places to hang out are Santo Spirito and Sant’Ambrogio. - Cultural differences (food, family, work, etc..)
Tipping! I’ll never get used to NOT tipping. I’m also not accustomed to the long lunch breaks. - A fun story to share
There are many little “happy accidents” that happen when you live abroad. One time, I sneezed on the train and 3 Italian grandmas all handed me a pack of tissues. - What to pack before travelling to Florence?
Power banks! I’m using maps, dictionaries, and video chats so much that my battery never lasts a full day. Also any OTC meds you take regularly. - Must do weekend trips (ie. in Tuscany, Rome, Milan, etc…)
Bologna! Just a short train ride away and yet a completely different and amazing city. The porticos and food markets are amazing. - Any advice to the newcomers?
Have patience! If it’s your first time abroad, it can be daunting. Dare yourself to talk to the people in the small markets or those behind the counter at the supermarket. You’ll be glad you did!
